For the next stage Benita curled up in the middle of the single bank seat with her head on Brendan's lap and drifted off to sleep.

Amaal concentrated on the road and managed to turn on the headlights.

"It will probably be early to mid-morning when we arrive," she said.

"We should be able to get a phone connection and maybe internet?"

"Brendan, people can be traced by phone signal. Do you want to risk it? I'd say keep your phone powered off and maybe remove the sim card."

"Good thinking," Brendan agreed. "Maybe we can buy a new sim free phone and get a pay as you go."

"We have Khan's dirty money. Let’s spend that first."

"OK agreed. And if there's no need to change gear I could take a session at the wheel."

"No Brendan, you don't know Indian drivers. Let me and Benita do the driving. And you must rest your left arm. We can get you to a doctor when we get a place to stay."

"I feel fine."

"Just a check-up. Daksha is very good but just to be sure, we don't want you getting sepsis."

"OK."

"I've been thinking," Amaal added.

"An opinion?" Brendan asked with a smile.

Amaal wondered had Brendan overheard her conversation with Benita. Then she hoped he had.

"I assume we are assumed to be dead, killed by Khan and his underlings."

"Good assumption."

"I put my Mehar. My dowry, into a separate private account in a different bank. But I have a family account where my allowance goes."

"Understood."

"And I transferred my savings, due to the fact that I don't really spend my allowance, into the same account. Nobody of my family knows this. At one stage I thought to run away, but I was afraid as they were bound to send searchers after me."

"Understood," Brendan repeated, wondering where the conversation was going.

"I think, not you Brendan, nor Benita, should touch your cards or your bank accounts. We must run on cash and on my savings. If there are transactions on our accounts or cards it might suggest that we are still alive."

"Good thinking. However I have a Revolut.com account and a card. I topped up for India. We can use that also."

"Is it known to Aftab?"

"No, it's my private back up account. When I get home I'll open a new bank account and switch my salary. But enquiries at my office would reveal my return. I took two months leave of absence to come to India."

"Ok."

"Also as a student member of the institute of Chartered Accountants, my name and address are on their file."

"Just leave them unchanged but change where we will live. And in my opinion you should resign and look for a new job when you get home. Write from Delhi using the palace address not Delhi, to tell them you are staying in India and date the letter a week ago. They'll think it's a slow postal system. And they will keep the letter but not the envelope with the postmark."

"I'm in articles Amaal. I have to stay in my job until I get all the exams.
